Friedrich Nietzsche

Friedrich Nietzsche (1844-1900) was a German philosopher, cultural critic, and philologist whose work has had a profound influence on modern intellectual history. Born in Röcken, Prussia, Nietzsche showed early academic promise and eventually studied classical philology at the University of Bonn and later at Leipzig. At the age of 24, he was appointed to a professorship at the University of Basel, but he had to retire in 1879 due to health issues.

Nietzsche is best known for his critiques of traditional European morality and religion, most notably Christianity, and for his concept of the “Übermensch” or “overman.” His key works include “Thus Spoke Zarathustra,” “Beyond Good and Evil,” and “The Genealogy of Morals.” Nietzsche introduced innovative ideas such as the “will to power” and the declaration that “God is dead,” challenging the foundations of conventional morality and inspiring future existentialist and postmodern thinkers.

Throughout his life, Nietzsche battled numerous illnesses, both physical and mental, which culminated in a mental collapse in 1889. He spent his final years in the care of his sister Elisabeth, passing away in 1900 in Weimar. Despite his relatively short life and limited initial recognition, Nietzsche’s work has become a cornerstone of modern philosophical and cultural thought.
